New SepiaWave Patent Improves Traffic Efficiency at Intersections

Seattle, WA – October 12, 2011 – SepiaWave received U.S. Patent 8,031,062 for a mobile or integrated device with various applications to automotive markets.  Using a combination of sensors, in conjunction with a navigation database the device alerts the driver as to the status of traffic lights at junctions and provides an advisory prompt when lights change color.

Incremental improvements in vehicle and traffic management systems offer massive benefits considering the growth of road traffic relative to the slow growth of infrastructure.  The U.S. DOT recently reported on the benefits of smarter traffic light management.  For example, in the Tysons Corner area of Northern Virginia, approximately 40 signalized intersections were monitored and it was concluded that stops could be reduced by approximately 6%, system delays decreased by an estimated 22 percent, and fuel consumption improved by an estimated 9%.  According to the study total annual emissions of CO, NOx, and VOC were decreased by an estimated 134.6 thousand kilograms.
