Personal Communications

It’s all about Bandwidth - As reported by Joel Garreau in the Washington Post in February 2008, we have now passed a milestone of more than 3.3 Billion active cell phones on a planet of some 6.5 billion humans in a period of about 26 years.  This is the fastest global diffusion of any technology in human history, according to Joel, and we could not agree more.  Industry experts predict another billion users by 2010 and the final billion or so with a few years thereafter.  So how do we accommodate this growth and all of the seemingly inevitable accompanying features and functions?  The answer is simple – do it smarter.  SepiaWave is introducing innovative techniques and systems to improve the capacity of our existing networks as they struggle to accommodate a continuous and vigorous growth in demand.

Industry Dynamics

Cellular technology promises to offer increased coverage and capacity in the next several years with handsets seeing incremental enhancements in displays, storage capacity and functionality, including better speech recognition.  However, many experts do not see the roll out of a new technology such as 4G in the near future.  Users will see a steady but substantial change and will rely on the handset as a single device to manage not just communications but many aspects of their lives.  Users will see the world as one large communications network, able to provide them with whatever content they need, wherever they are.

It is reasonable to predict that bandwidth capacity of data networks and cellular bandwidth will be a key issue going forward or a limiting factor, as we have a potential scenario of the basic 3G infrastructure supporting exponential growth in applications for the foreseeable future.  Furthermore, techniques for bandwidth management will continue to play a key role in the developing data communications infrastructure for messaging and content delivery.  SepiaWave is pioneering innovative techniques for bandwidth management and content delivery.
